The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) was called to the scene at around 2:40 p.m. together with paramedics and firefighters.

First responders “had to perform resuscitation maneuvers” with the nine-year-old child, who “is currently in critical condition,” SQ spokeswoman Béatrice Dorsainville said early that evening.

The other girl, seven years old, was also injured but there is no fear for her life.

“We have an investigator and the forensic identification service that are on site analyzing the crime scene,” Ms. Dorsainville added. She could not immediately clarify whether the children were accompanied by an adult during the event.

A shock to the community

The mayor of Saint-Ubalde, Guy Germain, was shocked on Sunday evening. He had just received the sad news from the small community fire chief, who had driven to the scene to help first responders.

“It’s a small community, it’s a shock,” Guy Germain replied, assuring that the young victim’s family would receive “support”.

“We have a hundred children who go to school tomorrow. The procedures are [aussi] for what they are: to support the children, the relatives, the teachers of the school,” he explained.
