The world faces another “great war” and economic ruin in 2023 — at least according to the predictions of the 16th-century astrologer Nostradamus.
In his famous book “Les Propheties”, published in 1555 with 942 poetic verses, so-called quatrains, the Frenchman is said to have predicted the future.
Some believe Nostradamus predicted 9/11, the devastation caused by global warming, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and even advances in AI technology.
The world faces another “great war” and economic ruin in 2023 – at least according to the predictions of the 16th-century astrologer Nostradamus (pictured).
Dubbed the “prophet of doom,” the doctor drew inspiration from biblical texts and his own experiences with the plague, with his predictions centered on hunger and suffering.
More than 400 years after Nostradamus published his book, his work remains popular because his predictions are completely open to interpretation and could mean anything.
Here, Web looks at some of Nostradamus’ predictions for the next year.
A “great war” waged by “evil” forces
‘Seven months of great war, people died from evil.’

The workings of Nostradamus predicted a “great war” in 2023.
The ominous prediction comes at a time of heightened global tensions between the world’s leading superpowers.
Russia is growing increasingly desperate as Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has so far failed to show any semblance of victory.
Could the 75-year-old dictator swoop down on his former Soviet satellite state and go nuclear? Or could he declare war on a NATO ally after sabotaging more underwater cables?
Or perhaps an emboldened China will launch a confrontation with the US with an invasion of Taiwan or over disputed territories in the South China Sea?
Elsewhere, tensions could flare up again between Pakistan and India, two nuclear-capable powers that frequently skirmish over disputed territory in Kashmir and Jammu.
However, for those who believe in Nostradamus’ abilities to see into the future, the description of the “seven months” might offer some comfort.
It suggests a conventional war as any battle would be over within a few hours with the exchange of atomic bombs.
“The light on Mars will go out”
A prediction by Nostradamus says: “The light on Mars will go out”
This is another cryptic message in the same quatrain, predicting a “great war.”
Could this be a warning for Elon Musk, whose company SpaceX plans to send humans to Mars by 2026?
Maybe his dream of colonizing the red planet will somehow fizzle out next year.
It comes as his Twitter takeover in 2022 drew widespread criticism, with scores of users, including several celebrities, deactivating their accounts.
The world’s richest man reportedly lost $92 billion of his fortune after buying Twitter this year.
It could also indicate problems for NASA’s exploration program. His Perseverance rover is currently on the Red Planet, taking photos and collecting samples.
It will be hoped that there is no danger to the actual planet Mars itself from any cataclysmic astrological event.
economic catastrophe
“So high will the bushel of wheat rise that man will devour his fellow.”

This chilling prediction paints a picture of a total collapse in food supply networks, leaving some people so desperate that they resort to cannibalism.
Could it be a sign of bad things to come as the war in Ukraine continues? It comes after Putin blocked grain shipments from the war-torn country earlier this year.
One of the ships blocked in October had transported vital 40,000 tons of wheat to Ethiopia as part of a UN aid program.
Meanwhile, food costs were soaring around the world, contributing to cost-of-living crises and rising poverty rates, including in the UK.
But other factors are at play as the world’s largest economies struggle to recover from the devastating Covid pandemic and a new economic downturn looms.
A recession looms in Britain after the economy contracted by 0.2% between July and September.
And in a bleak forecast report for 2023, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted “the worst is yet to come.”
“For a lot of people, 2023 will feel like a recession,” it said, forecasting an economic downturn in at least a third of the world.
accelerate climate change
“The rainbow will not be seen for forty years. It will be seen every day for forty years.
‘The dry earth will dry up more and more, and there will be great floods when they are seen.’
Houses are surrounded by floodwaters in August in the town of Sohbat Pur, a district of southwest Pakistan’s Balochistan province
This particular prophecy seems quite fitting given the current climate.
Europe experienced its worst drought in 500 years in 2022, while the Horn of Africa is currently experiencing the longest and most severe drought on record, putting millions of people at risk of starvation.
Disastrous floods also hit Pakistan between June and October, killing more than 1,700 people and causing more than £14 billion in damage.
If you believe Nostradamus’ prediction, there could be even worse climate catastrophes next year – hoping nothing lasts 40 years.
revolt and civil unrest
“Sooner and later you will see great changes, terrible horrors and revenge”
“The trumpet trembles in great discord. An agreement broken: raise your face to the sky: the bloody mouth will swim with blood; the face anointed with milk and honey lies on the ground.’
A protester holds a portrait of Mahsa Amini during a demonstration in support of Amini, a young Iranian woman who died after being arrested by the Islamic Republic’s morality police on Istiklal Avenue in Istanbul on September 20, 2022 in Tehran
These Nostradamus quatrains warn of possible civil unrest and uprisings – and come at a time of rising tensions between classes and other groups, both in Western democracies and in more autocratic states.
There is a growing disdain for the super-rich, who have continued to grow their astronomical wealth despite the Covid pandemic, which has impoverished the overwhelming majority of the world’s population.
Could the lower economic classes start some kind of revolt, similar to the US Capitol Riot in January 2021?
This year has also seen other potential revolts, including in Iran, where protests and demonstrations continue following the murder of a woman by the country’s so-called “morality police.” Country says it’s closing down the force, but will it be enough to stem the wave of widespread resistance?
According to the global protest tracker, more than 132 countries experienced “substantial protests” in 2022, with nearly a quarter (23 percent) lasting longer than three months.
Who Was Nostradamus? The French philosopher and “seer” prepared horoscopes for kings and was in great demand for his “prophecies”.
Nostradamus was a 16th century seer. He and his prophecies—revered by some, ridiculed by others—are well known and continue to be the subject of debate, even today, centuries after he lived.
Nostradamus was born in France in 1503. He initially worked as a physician and began his medical practice in the 1530s, although he did so without a medical degree. He began making prophecies around 1547 and published them in a book entitled Centuries (1555).
He wrote his prophecies in quatrains: four lines of rhyming verse. The quatrains were grouped in hundreds; each set of 100 quatrains was called a century. Nostradamus rose to fame during his lifetime when some of his predictions seemed to come true.
He was in great demand and was even invited to the court of Catherine de Medici, then queen consort of King Henry II of France, to do horoscopes for her children.
Nostradamus’ predictions typically related to general types of events, such as natural disasters and conflict-related incidents, that occur regularly over time.
Some people believe that his prophecies predicted actual events, such as the death of Henry II, the French Revolution, the rise of Napoleon, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and the September 11 attacks.
Others claim that it’s possible to find one that corresponds to almost every event that has occurred, since his prophecies tend to refer to general types of events that happen frequently throughout history – and in cryptic and vague ways are written.
