While GTA 6 (or Gran Theft Auto 6) is scheduled to be released in 2025, Netflix is reportedly in negotiations with the publisher to get a game from this license. The streaming giant wants to enrich its catalog of video games and thus strengthen its place in the gaming scene. We’ll explain it to you.
The video game market within reach of Netflix
This is nothing new: Netflix has been trying to find a place in the gaming world for some time. Already in 2021, the SVOD platform has expanded its catalog to include mobile games. Today, its dedicated service includes more than 50 titles! Please note that the latter – available on tablets and smartphones – are included directly in the Classic subscription and therefore do not require any additional costs. But the streaming platform doesn’t want to stop there!

The American company is currently in talks with studio Take-Two Interactive, the current publisher of GTA. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, the two companies are actually discussing licensing the rights to the franchise. So Netflix continues its rise with complete discretion, or almost. Additionally, the streaming platform has reportedly partnered with Ubisoft to add an Assassin’s Creed game to its catalog. So all that’s left is the last GTA, which has a more than exemplary collection!
A thriving market for Netflix?
Even if the streaming platform does not have the ambition to become a full-fledged provider of video games, its special offer can set it apart from the competition (Disney+, Prime Video and soon Max) by offering subscribers real added value. And I like it! According to Apptopia, the company recorded 70.5 million Netflix game downloads worldwide in September 2023, compared to 30.4 million in September 2022.
Finally, note that Netflix is in the process of developing cloud gaming, when all games currently available would be accessible via a smartphone or tablet. The goal ? Allow your fans to play on their TV using their smartphone as a controller.
