A look at Tina Turner’s 260,000-square-foot, $76 million estate in Switzerland

Tina Turner, 83, died Wednesday after a long illness at her home near Zurich, Switzerland, but two years before her death she and her husband paid a whopping $76 million for a waterfront property overlooking Lake Zurich.

The ten-building property was purchased by Turner and her German-born husband, Erwin Bach, as a weekend retreat.

The 25,000 square foot lot features water features such as a private pond, creek, swimming pool and boat deck.

While many details of the property still remain undisclosed, pictures show the enormous size of the property.

Turner and Bach had to wait until they received official Swiss citizenship before purchasing the property, as a Swiss law states that non-residents are not allowed to purchase property in the country.

Swiss news outlets reported when Turner bought the home that tennis superstar Roger Federer had also considered buying the property before settling on another home in the same community of Staefa Village – outside of Zurich.

Turner left the United States decades ago for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is her star power across the pond.

“I left America because I was successful in another country and my boyfriend was in another country,” she told Larry King in 1997, citing Private Dancer’s popularity in the UK.

“Basically, Europe has been very supportive of my music,” she said.

Eventually, she and Bach decided to settle in Switzerland and then appropriate the vast estate in the village of Staefa.

The couple rented a house called Chateau Algonquin in nearby Küsnacht for many years before officially purchasing it almost two years ago.

Turner, known for hits like “Proud Mary” and “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” married Bach, a German music executive, in 2013 after a long relationship. The couple has lived together in Europe since 1994.

The veteran singer made the purchase just before agreeing to sell the rights to her entire music catalog to publishing giant BMG for $50 million.

Through the deal, BMG acquired hits like “The Best” and “Nutbush City Limits” as well as the rights to Turner’s name and image.

The singer is known for her distinctive voice, boundless energy and tumultuous relationship with her former husband Ike Turner. She has had five platinum albums, including 1984’s Private Dancer.

Turner is survived by two of her four sons – two predeceased her – and Bach, who is 67.

Turner was born Anna-Mae Bullock in 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee, to Zelma and Floyd Bullock. Overcoming a turbulent childhood and an abusive marriage, he became a musical sensation and legendary artist.
