At around 11:20 p.m., the emergency services were alerted by gunfire on Rue du Canada near the Rivière des Prairies in the Saint-François district.
When they arrived at the scene, police discovered a vehicle riddled with projectiles. A man was in the car with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead after several attempts at resuscitation.
The victim was not known to police circles in Laval.
A large security perimeter was set up in the area to protect the crime scene.
A mobile command post has been established.

Our investigators are on site. In particular, they are meeting witnesses and analyzing statements received during the night, said agent Stéphanie Beshara, spokeswoman for the Laval Police Service (SPL), just before dawn on Saturday.
At the time of writing, SPL investigators could not indicate if there were one or more suspects.
Forensic scientists and a dog handler were called to the scene, where a mobile command post was also set up.
