At least one person died and four others were injured in a machete attack that took place in several churches in Algeciras (Cádiz) after 8 p.m. this Wednesday. According to the Interior Ministry, a person staged a knife attack that killed one person and injured others. The man was arrested and is being held by the National Police. One of the attacks occurred in a church in Plaza Alta, where a seriously injured person was inside, while the person who was killed, the sacristan, was outside.
The facts are being investigated and analyzed without it being possible at this time to determine the nature of the attack, according to inside sources. However, the public prosecutor’s office of the regional court assumes a suspected terrorist attack, reports the State Ministry. Police sources warn of the confusion so far and point out that there have been attacks in “at least two churches”. The same sources confirm that the attacker had no papers, but “it appears that he is of Moroccan origin”.
A priest from Algeciras described the events as follows: “The attacker first went to the parish of San Isidro, where he attacked a person. And later he went to the church in Plaza de la Palma, where he met the sacristan on the street and attacked him right where he was lying on the ground. Later it seemed to be going to the Virgen de Europa church, but I don’t remember if it arrived. All churches are in the center of the city.
The 112 Andalusia Emergency Service has received numerous notifications from individuals about the event but the toilets were unable to do anything to save the victim’s life and it was local police who confirmed the death. The President of the Junta de Andalucia, Juan Manuel Moreno, lamented the events via Twitter: “Terrible and heartbreaking. A sacristan was killed and at least one other priest injured in an attack in Algeciras. Prudence, the facts are being investigated.” The Muslim community also submitted a rejection.
Terrible and heartbreaking. A sacristan was killed and at least one other priest injured in an attack in Algeciras. Prudence, the facts are examined.
I condemn the crime in the strongest terms.
Intolerance will never have a place in our society.
