A Bolivian who got lost on a hunting trip in the Amazon rainforest has shared how he survived his mishap for 31 days.
Jhonattan Acosta, 30, was separated from his friends while traveling to northern Bolivia. He claims to have drunk rainwater by collecting it in his shoes and eaten worms and insects while hiding from jaguars and peccaries, a pig-like species.
Mr Acosta was found by a search team of local residents and friends a month after his disappearance.
“It’s crazy, I didn’t think people would be looking for me for so long,” he admitted, touched.
“I ate worms, insects… If I told you everything I have to do to survive, you wouldn’t believe me,” he told a local TV station. He also ate wild fruits that looked like papayas.
“I thank God all the time. It gave me a new life,” he says.
His family said they would ask him for more details about his survival after the shock wore off. Mr. Acosta lost 37 pounds and sprained his ankle. He was very dehydrated when he was found. He could still walk, according to people who found him.
“He only had one bullet left in his rifle. He had trouble walking and thought no one was looking for him,” the man’s little brother said.
Jhonattan Acosta used his last bullet to scare off a herd of peccaries. According to his little brother, the man decided to give up chasing after his mishap.
