The illegal route that takes a person from Nepal to an Indian restaurant in Madrid or Las Palmas costs 15,000 euros. A Nepalese family asked their compatriots to take them irregularly to Spain, where they ended up cooking or serving food from the Indian subcontinent. The National Police have dismantled the Spanish branch of this network, which is known to have illegally transported 83 Nepalese migrants, although it is estimated that the gang smuggled 300 people of this nationality, which it transported via India, Thailand and Russia borders of Poland, Romania or Malta enter European territory. The organization fraudulently obtained Type D visas, which allow people to stay, study or work in the Schengen area for a period of more than 90 days. Nine people were arrested in Spain.
The journey begins in Nepal, possibly in Gandaki Province, a country whose immigration to Europe and the US has skyrocketed in recent years (in percentage terms, not absolute numbers). The applicants had a well-known and international conspiracy that affected India, Nepal, Lithuania and Poland, the National Police explained in a note this morning. Part of the gang fell in 2022 with the arrest of 175 people who had facilitated the irregular entry of migrants into Europe and the USA.
After the migrant was captured, he was taken via the so-called “smuggling route”. The first stop is always India, as the European embassies and consulates for Nepal are located in the southern neighboring country. To obtain the visa, applicants submitted documents containing fake job or study offers, defrauding companies from Europe and Asia involved in the scam. After having the D visa stamped in their passport, the migrants continued their journey by plane from India to Europe, particularly Serbia or Russia, and had to travel overland from the Balkan country to Romania. From there they reached Spain via Hungary, Austria, Italy and France. The other entry options are Poland and Malta.
Police have arrested nine people – seven in Madrid and two in Las Palmas, possibly the two provinces with the largest population in the Indian subcontinent and the most restaurants of these nationalities – and have discovered a new type of fraud that involves making it easier make for Nepalese After their arrival and settlement, they received Spanish citizenship for 5,000 euros. “In consultation with some language academies, they facilitated the exam questions or falsified the completion of the said tests that were used to obtain the certificates and diplomas necessary to acquire Spanish citizenship,” the police write.
The police called this operation Operation Everest as this is not only the name of the highest mountain in the world between Tibet and Nepal, but also one of the most common names of Indian restaurants in Spain.
