James van Riemsdyk’s little brother, who spent the last campaign of a two-year pact worth $950,000 a year, will be paid a salary of $3 million a season through 2026.
John Carlson’s long-term injury, limited to 30 games this season, opened the door for van Riemsdyk. He averaged 19 minutes per game on the ice, a career high.
His responsibility is all the more important following the injury of another right-back, Nick Jensen. Together with newcomer Rasmus Sandin, van Riemsdyk played more than 25 minutes in the last two games of the “Caps”.
In 2022/23, the New Jersey native has already achieved personal bests in goals (seven) and points (19). He is also seventh in the Bettman circuit for blocked shots (146).
He was never drafted but also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he won the 2015 Stanley Cup, and the Carolina Hurricanes during a 522-game career.
