A pocket record broken by a Quebecer

Quebecer Mathieu Betts of the British Columbia Lions broke the Canadian Football League (CFL) record for the most possessions scored by a Canadian athlete in a season on Friday night by tackling the opposing quarterback once behind his offensive line.

In fact, Betts finished the campaign with a total of 18 sacks, breaking the previous mark set by Jamaal Westerman (2015) and Brent Johnson (2005). However, the former Laval University Rouge et Or’s success was overshadowed by the Lions’ 41-16 loss to the Calgary Stampeders.

Regardless, the Lions defensive lineman has extended his current streak of games with at least one sack to five and the British Columbia team can now focus on the playoffs.

Betts started the season with nine sacks after just five games. As a member of the Lions, the former Rouge et Or now has 25 sacks in 36 games.

The final CFL record for most sacks in a season still belongs to James Parker of the Lions with 26.5 in 1984.
