A Gatineau-area police officer was arrested by his colleagues Sunday evening after he was involved in a crash while driving three times the alcohol limit.
The MRC-des-Collines de l’Outaouais police briefly confirmed Monday afternoon that one of its officers had been arrested the day before after an accident in Gatineau.
“It should be noted that the police officer was not on duty during the arrest,” police clarified, saying only that they are “closely monitoring the situation and will take necessary action in this matter.”
For their part, the Gatineau police said they intervened after two collisions involving a total of three vehicles at around 7 p.m. at the corner of Montée Paiement and Rue Davidson.
The vehicle driven by the suspect first crashed into an oncoming car on the Montée Paiement overpass before crashing into a second vehicle at the corner of Davidson Street.
Rescue pliers were needed to remove the driver of the first from the suspect, a woman who suffered injuries that required transport to a hospital. However, his life is not in danger.
There were three people in the second vehicle struck by the suspect, but no one was injured.
The 48-year-old police officer was arrested and taken to the police station, where the alcohol test showed a level over three times the legal limit of 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
The man was released on a promise to appear in court. He is expected to face charges of negligence and dangerous driving.
In the meantime, his driver’s license was revoked and his vehicle was confiscated.
