A police officer is injured in a shootout outside the gates of Mexico City airport

At least one police officer was injured in a shooting outside Terminal 1 of Mexico City International Airport (AICM). The airport administration reported in a statement on social networks that a “pursuit operation against suspected criminals” ended in a shootout on Avenida Captain Carlos León, right in front of the airport terminal doors. A man was arrested after the shooting. “No passengers or visitors were put at risk. “At this point, the relevant judicial authorities are acting,” the AICM statement said.

In videos shared on social media, gunshots can be heard as travelers try to hide between domestic airline counters. The airport authorities assure that everything happened outside the terminal. Airfield security is the responsibility of the Navy.

Mexico City’s Secretariat for Citizen Security confirmed in a statement that its intelligence and investigative agents were pursuing a group of men “due to various complaints from citizens about theft in the customs area.” As the driver followed a car, he began shooting at officers and drove his car to the terminal parking lot, “where he struck several vehicles and was arrested as he exited the unit.” The Minister of Citizen Security, Pablo Vázquez Camacho, confirmed on his social networks that his agents were investigating the theft of trucks in the customs area of the airport at the time of the shooting.

A month ago, another shooting alarmed AICM attendees. On August 9, a shootout between Nezahualcóyotl police and several armed men in Terminal 2 of the same airport left two people injured. At that time, the agents of the State of Mexico were also pursuing a criminal group.
