A power outage plunges all of New York into darkness

A brief power outage plunged all of New York into darkness Thursday evening as smoke billowed from a power plant in Brooklyn.

Shortly before midnight, images shared on social media and reported by the New York Post showed smoke rising from a Con Edison substation in Vinegar Hill.

New York's electric utility did not immediately respond to the outage, while the New York City Fire Department reported multiple calls reporting power outages and blocked elevators.

“We are currently investigating this issue and appreciate your patience as we review this matter,” Con Edison later posted on X (formerly Twitter), as if responding to customer concerns.

Elevators and escalators at Central Station stopped working due to “a power problem at Con Edison,” the Long Island Rail Road transportation system reported.

According to the New York tabloid, police officers were on duty at the Con Ed substation on Gold Street, where an explosion in a transformer caused power surges and outages throughout New York City.
