A repeat offender would have set fire to his ex’s apartment

Barely released from prison over a history of domestic violence, a man has been arrested again, this time for allegedly setting fire to his ex-spouse’s home in Magog.

Nicolas Collin was handcuffed last Friday in connection with an arson attack that broke out five days earlier at a residential building on Principale East Street.

According to the denunciation file, the 32-year-old accused attacked his ex-wife’s apartment directly.

“I lost everything,” the victim wrote on Facebook days after his home caught fire.

No one was injured in the fire, which severely affected two of the building’s four apartments.

Collin was arraigned at Sherbrooke Courthouse on Saturday and remains in custody pending further trial.

The Magog resident was also charged with criminal harassment and mischief at his ex-spouse’s vehicle over events that allegedly took place after the fire.

“The accused crimes are all related to the couple’s separation,” said Régie de Police Memphrémagog spokesman Carl Pépin.

Not the first time

Nicolas Collin was released from prison at the end of September after serving a 33-day sentence.

He had been convicted of mischief against the same ex-spouse.

Since 2019, Collin had been arrested multiple times by Magog police officers for domestic violence-related offenses.
