A three-year-old Brazilian girl died earlier this month after being stung by a scorpion that climbed into her bed, local media reported.
Maria Fernanda Brito da Silva was sleeping peacefully at her residence in Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil, on September 25 when the arachnid crawled under her clothes and stung her as she slept.
The little girl woke up immediately and her screams quickly alerted her mother, who ran to her room.
“The image will always stay in my head. She sat up in bed and turned over. Then I saw the scorpion behind his back. It was not a small scorpion, but a large one,” Vanessa Ramirez da Silva told Primeira Pagina.
“I hit it and my daughter, even though she was in pain, raised her finger and pointed to the scorpion that was on my sweater. I hit him and threw him to the ground, then I killed him,” the girl’s mother added.
Ms. Ramirez da Silva then came out of her house and called for help because her daughter was vomiting. A neighbor took her to the hospital, where young Maria was treated for cardiac arrest.
After lying between life and death for several days, the 3-year-old child breathed his last in the intensive care unit on October 1st.
The girl’s funeral took place the next day.
“It is an endless pain. “My daughter is a fighter, a single mother who dedicates her whole life to her children,” the victim’s grandmother testified.
