Japan issued severe tsunami warnings on Monday after a series of strong earthquakes shook western areas.
The Japan Meterological Agency reported a quake in Ishikawa and surrounding prefectures, one of which had a preliminary magnitude of 7.4.
Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV warned that streams of water could reach up to five meters (16.5 feet) and urged people to flee to higher ground or a nearby building as quickly as possible.
Waves more than a meter high hit the coast of Wajima city in Ishikawa Prefecture, NHK reported.
There were initially no reports of damage.
Hokuriku Electric Power said it was checking its nuclear power plants for any irregularities, NHK reported.
