A star is bombed! Barbra Streisand's highly anticipated $47, 1,000-page memoir is a huge FLOP, selling just 212,000 copies since its release in November, even though the singer was likely paid a gigantic advance

Barbra Streisand's $47 blockbuster memoir, billed as a 1,000-page love letter “to herself,” has failed to win over the general public, sales statistics show.

“My Name is Barbra,” released in early November, has sold just 212,000 copies, according to figures released this week by Publishers Weekly – weeks after the 81-year-old singer promised it would mark the end of her storied career.

Streisand's prophecy appears to be coming true, even if it wasn't exactly as she intended – as sales of the pricey book lag behind the milestones set by similar memoirs like Prince Harry's “Spare” and “The Woman in Me” were set by Britney Spears.

After initially selling over 55,000 copies in the first week, overall sales have stalled since then, with barely 7,200 copies sold last week, statistics show. Streisand is believed to have received an eight-figure advance for the volume, but details of any payments were kept secret.

The new figure is well below the weekly sales of 12 non-fiction books above it, including Spears' book. It's also about 13 percent of the sales seen in the book's first week, meaning interest has waned significantly.

Among them was Spears', which racked up 908,580 sales since its release in October – nearly five times as many as Streisand's.

The book — another music-centric memoir with a much shorter career — also surpasses Streisand's in weekly sales, which currently stands at 18,842, despite being on shelves a full two months before Barbra's.

A September biography of South African Elon Musk and another memoir published just a few weeks ago, surpassing My Name is Barba in terms of sales, were also written last week by a much less influential Liz Cheney, daughter of the late Vice President Dick .

The book, titled “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning,” was released on December 5 – almost a full month later than Streisand’s.

Still, the former Wyoming representative's first attempt at sales, “My Name is Barbra,” surpassed 50,000 copies in that period, selling 269,794 copies in just four weeks.

In terms of weekly sales, the 57-year-old's book, who represented Wyoming's entire congressional district in the House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023, also beats Streisand's book with 23,826 compared to the singer's 7,201.

The difference between the two is almost four times. Statistics show that a book published in October by outspoken progressive author Rachel Maddow is still selling more than 9,500 copies per week.

What further underscores this mediocrity is the fact that all the books are surpassed by a mere cookbook – one that will be published in the final weeks of 2023.

The book, titled “Dinner Tonight: 100 Easy, Healthy Recipes for Every Night of the Week,” doesn't contain anything groundbreaking, but it is currently selling about 35,700 copies per week, according to Publishers Weekly.

To put things in perspective, royal biographer Omid Scobie's “Endgame” — which was also considered a bust — sold just 8,923 copies in the U.S. in its first week of sales last month.

Today, the book, billed as an “explosive, in-depth” examination of the current state of the British monarchy, remains ranked behind children's books such as “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “Stick Man,” as well as biographies by Spears and the late Matthew Perry .

Both books, meanwhile, failed to reach the record sales achieved by Prince Harry's own memoir “Spare” since its publication in January 2023.

The highly anticipated autobiography sold a whopping 467,183 copies in the US alone in its first week and over 2.7 million copies in the rest of the world.

The figure was announced after the 39-year-old ex-roy was rumored to have received a $20 million advance for the company after quitting his royal position and marrying his wife, Suits star Megan Markle. had moved to the USA.

As of Tuesday, it's unknown whether Streisand — who starred as country crooner Kris Kristofferson in 1978's “A Star Is Born” — received a similar signing bonus, although that's typically the case with such high-profile deals.

The book – currently being hailed as a success – is now the singer's first memoir and is intended to offer a funny, candid look at her impressive career spanning more than six decades. Streisand – famous for her diva behavior – refused to let publishers add an index to keep readers from focusing directly on the more salacious details contained in the monster memoir.

In it, she details her love life with some of her famous exes – including Miami Vice's Don Johnson, celebrity hairdresser and superstar producer Jon Peters and former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau – although she revealed in recent interviews that she did I preferred to leave these accounts out.

“Listen, I didn't want to write about any of them!” she told CBS Sunday Morning's Gayle King in November, responding forcefully after King listed some of the star's greatest accomplishments.

'But you did it!' Gayle responded – citing the Hello Dolly star's other high-profile relationships, including the ill-fated one with ex-husband Elliott Gould and one still ongoing with her longtime second husband James Brolin.

Streisand, who had just promoted the book on Stephen Colbert's Late Show, instead blamed her editor for the book's more salacious material, recounting: “My editor said, 'You have to leave some blood on the page.'

To state the obvious: Barbra's book failed to match the record sales of Prince Harry's own memoir, Spare, released in January 2023. Since then, it has sold 467,183 copies in the US alone in its first week and a total of 2.7 million copies in the rest of the world

Given the impressive six-decade career before it, the sales figures are likely a disappointment.

In an excerpt obtained by People, she wrote about how, early in her career, she was pressured to undergo surgery to make her famous nose thinner, as well as dental work to “hide her teeth.”

The musician recalled the suggestion made sometime in the early '60s: “I thought: Isn't my talent enough?” A nose job would be painful and expensive. Besides, how could I trust anyone to do exactly what I wanted and nothing more?”

Streisand also revealed why she never underwent the recommended rhinoplasty – writing that she “always liked” the shape of her nose and publicly musing, “Who knows what?” [the surgery] could this have something to do with my voice?'

The actress also wrote how gambling on the stock market gave her a completely unknown thrill and how “From about 1998 to 2000 [she] was traded Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

“At 6:25 a.m. my eyes opened wide without any alarm,” one paragraph reads.

“I got up, put on my robe, sat down at my new desk with a cup of hot chocolate and started trading.” It was a whole new learning experience. I like gambling. “Whenever I sang in Las Vegas, I played blackjack,” she said.

The New York native, who won eight Grammy awards over her 60-year career, earned $1.8 million in five months but eventually gave up the hobby when it became too stressful.

“I don’t play with such large amounts of money anymore,” she writes, after suffering big losses during the recession of the mid-2000s.

“After suffering several burns (I lost my shirt, my dress and my nerves in the 2008 financial crisis), I decided to stick with bonds.”

The book also looks at the years that followed and how the aging star recently decided to leave show business for good due to her current desire to just “live life.”

In an emotional interview with the BBC the week after the book's publication, she spoke about this decision, which was made in connection with the publication of her memoirs, and explained that the volume deals not only with her entire personal life, but also with the of her famous friends.

“I want to live life,” she expressed, calling “I Am Barbra” her last offering before she retreated from the spotlight.

“I want to get in my husband's truck and just wander around, hopefully with the kids somewhere near us,” she continued of her family, which includes stepson Josh Brolin, grandson Trevor Brolin and son Jason Gould, whom she met with her first Husband shares.

“Life is fun for me when they come over,” added Streisand, who lives with her second husband in a sprawling home on the California coast.

“They love playing with the dogs and we have fun.” To be honest, I haven't had much fun in my life. And I want to have more fun.'

While statistics show her book is going down in flames, fans can't help but admire the legacy she left behind — as well as the incredible talent that the memoir may not express.

It is long and substantial, comprising 992 pages and “[is] “Not a book to inhale,” Times critic Wesley Morris recently wrote.

“The size literally makes the career it entails,” he added. “Streisand broods over her life and pours it out.”

Other qualities to appreciate when the star's career comes to an unceremonious end are her resilience and authenticity – qualities that the book is certainly able to convey in its many passages.

Nevertheless, the sales figures are likely to be a disappointment considering the impressive career that preceded it.
