“I would especially like to mention the soldiers who are gradually returning their territories to Ukraine in the Bakhmut sector,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his daily video message.

“Klichtchiïvka: Well done! ” he added, listing the units involved in the operation.

“Klichtchiivka was cleared by Russians,” Oleksandr Syrsky, commander of the Ukrainian land army, reiterated on social networks.

This town, which had a few hundred residents before the Russian invasion, was captured by Russian forces in January.

The announcement came after Ukrainian forces said on Friday they had recaptured another town, Andriivka, south of Bakhmut. The Russian military said on Sunday that this was not the case.

Ukraine launched a counteroffensive in June to recapture Russian-occupied territory after receiving Western weapons and training new battalions.

Bakhmout, a city of 70,000 before the Russian invasion in February 2022, was captured by Russian forces last May after one of the longest and bloodiest battles of this war.

However, Ukrainian forces almost immediately began to regain ground on the northern and southern flanks of that city.
