In China, a traditional meal is reappearing on social networks. In fact, it’s atypical, to say the least, since it’s a stone-based dish, as reported by CNN.
Who said eating rocks isn’t a good idea? It’s even a traditional dish in China.
According to CNN, numerous videos showing this dish have been circulating on social networks since mid-June. Suodiu is a pan composed mainly of pebbles. The term suodiu, also called “the hardest dish in the world”, means “suck and throw” and refers to the way the dish should be eaten, specifies Géo magazine.
This dish has been on everyone’s lips on social media for a few weeks. Many local chefs share videos of their preparation. The chefs are filmed decorating the stones with garlic and chili. Some videos reach 800,000 views on the Chinese social network Weibo.
A dish that is hundreds of years old
This traditional dish, “several hundred years old” and originating from Hubei province, is mainly sold in the markets at a price of 16 yuan (about two euros). The stones are mined from the rivers and then cooked in the spirit of fast food. This dish “was originally prepared by local boatmen who ran out of animals and vegetables on their voyage,” says The Guardian.
Obviously the pebbles are not edible. As Geo reports, “some would have pointed out the choking hazard”, others “simply spat out the stones in disgust and the most curious wondered if they should ‘return the stones at the end of their meal'”.
