The search for evidence linked to Madeleine McCann at a remote reservoir in Portugal was reportedly prompted by information from a “very credible” whistleblower.

German and Portuguese authorities investigating suspect Christian Brückner continue to investigate the area around the Arade dam, which is about 45 minutes from the Portuguese town of Praia da Luz, where three-year-old Maddie went missing in 2007.

Overnight, Portuguese publication Expresso reported that the search was due to “a tip from a BKA informant that police believe is very credible.”

“This informant told investigators details that the German police took very seriously.”

The BKA is the German federal investigative agency, the equivalent of the American FBI.

Expresso said his information came from a source “close to the investigation”.

Any evidence found on site could provide a crucial link to the photographic evidence that placed Breuckner near the dam in 2007.

For the start of the second day, work focused on cutting back vegetation near the coast using lawn trimmers to clear an area for search parties.

Officers later appeared with rakes as mowing work continued near a Ford Ranger pickup truck parked just above the waterline ahead of the drought.

Two other officers — one with a Nikon camera and another with a clipboard — captured evidence photos in bright sunshine near the azure water.

A police dog also joined the search and was directed to a spot near the shore.

When combat swimmers are deployed, they face the difficult task of making their way through near-black water in search of evidence or human remains.

A drought has lowered water levels at the reservoir, with the worst drought in years believed to be key to the police breakthrough.

The 45-year-old Breuckner is said to have regularly parked his yellow and white VW motorhome in a parking lot near the water.

A Portuguese source told The Sun: “The search is being taken very seriously and is fully controlled by the Germans.”

“They are so sensitive to this information that they didn’t reveal the exact location of the search area until shortly before work began.

“They asked Portuguese officials who were supporting them to look for evidence – specifically rags.”

Jim Gamble was the UK’s Chief Child Protection Officer and led an investigation into the Madeleine case that led to the launch of the Metropolitan Police’s current investigation, Operation Grange.

He told The Sun: “I think we’re looking at the best chance we’ve had in 16 years to find out what happened to Madeleine.”

“They must have something final.”

But attorney Marcos Aragao Correia, who organized the original dive search of the reservoir, believes it would be a “miracle” if they found Maddie.

Correia, 47, claims he received a tip from an “underworld” contact who told him Maddie had been thrown into a “deserted lake of murky water”.

He organized a team of British divers to wade into the abandoned reservoir as part of a private search, but in 2008 the operation quickly ran out of money.

Breuckner is currently in prison for the 2005 rape of a US pensioner in Praia da Luz.
