A woman has gone viral on TikTok after filming her humiliating experience of being in a wheelchair on a flight and having to go to the bathroom.

Jenny Berrie, from the UK, was filming herself dragging her body on an AlbaStar Air flight when cabin crew refused to assist her on the flight from Newcastle Airport to Palma, Mallorca.

In her video, which has racked up over five million views, Berrie also said a crew member on her flight told her that “disabled people just carry [diapers]“Instead of having to use the toilet.

Airlines typically transport disabled passengers in aisle chairs, purpose-built wheelchairs slim enough to fit through an airplane’s galley.

However, while Berrie was transported to her seat in an aisle chair, Spain’s AlbaStar Air told her they could not keep one on board for her during the flight.

Insider has reached out to Berrie, but she explained on her Instagram that the flood of negative comments on her viral video made her turn off her phone for a long time.

Writing about the ordeal on Instagram, Berrie said she was told by staff that “in 27 years of working in airlines, they have never seen the problem of people with disabilities having to wear diapers.”

“Life as a disabled person can be downright humiliating and embarrassing at times and unfortunately this was one of those times. To be told straight to my face that I should wear a diaper when I don’t need it and that they’re fine with that policy made me feel humiliated,” she said in an Instagram Story.

The story goes on

In her video, you can see airline staff roll the bar cart past Berrie as she pulls herself into the bathroom.

In a statement to Insider, Alabaster Air said they “sincerely apologize for the incident that took place on one of our flights recently regarding the flight experience of a passenger with reduced mobility,” adding, “Aisle wheelchairs are not mandatory as per not even recommended or mentioned in current regulation when it comes to aircraft equipment/fittings.”

In response, Berrie has launched a petition to make aisle chairs compulsory on all flights to the UK and has nearly 5,000 signatures.

Taking to Instagram, Berrie said she was “glad she got video footage of everything,” adding, “I know people don’t want to see that, but without this footage, disabled people just aren’t believed.”

Additionally, she said that sharing these experiences online is “incredibly embarrassing and demeaning” but that she is doing so to “make sure things change.”

Wheelchair users and their chairs are often mistreated on airlines, with US Department of Transportation data showing that an average of 35.8 wheelchairs are broken or damaged on flights every day.

The lack of accessible toilets on flights is a major concern for disabled travelers. Wheelchair user Theo Donnelly previously told Insider he’s forced to urinate into bottles if he wants to fly.
