A woman dies after a crowd at the entrance to a concert

A 33-year-old woman died on Saturday morning after being seriously injured during a mass riot on Thursday night at the entrance of a London concert hall where Nigerian Afrobeat singer Asake was performing, police said.

Eight people had to be taken to hospital after being caught up in that stampede.

“Unfortunately, one of the seriously injured women died in hospital on Saturday morning,” police said. The victim, Rebecca Ikumelo, lived in London.

Two other women, aged 21 and 23, remain in critical condition, police said.

Singer Asake said in a statement posted to Instagram that he was “devastated” by the death. “I am overcome with grief and never imagined that something like this could happen,” he added.

“My team and I are still awaiting the full debriefing by venue managers and police to determine what led to these disruptions and ultimately Rebecca’s death,” the artist also wrote, urging those with information to get in touch to contact the police.

Investigation continues to understand how this concert at the O2 Academy in Brixton, south London, led to this mass movement.

On Friday, police said they were called following reports of “a large number of people attempting to force entry”.

According to the Daily Mirror tabloid, the concert was canceled en route to boos from spectators, and the team announced on stage: “Three thousand people have pushed the doors out and for safety reasons we have to put an end to the show.”

“There are people who broke down the doors. They got in and security is trying to deal with it,” the team reiterated, struggling to be heard.

Shortly before his concert series in London, the singer posted a message on Twitter asking people without tickets not to come to the O2 Academy.
