A woman had to have part of her leg amputated after she got stuck in a moving hallway at the airport in Bangkok, Thailand, on Thursday.
The 57-year-old Thai woman was on her way to the gate of her flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province when the incident happened, Global News reported.
The authorities assume that the unknown woman fell on the platform. The force of the fall would have lifted the corridor’s movable safety screen.
The victim’s left leg was then trapped in the mechanism, according to the Bangkok Post. The airport medical team immediately had to amputate his leg above the knee.
She was then referred to the local hospital for further care.
The medical team at the hospital quickly confirmed to the woman that she could not reattach her leg, but she requested transfer to a hospital where it was possible.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, Don Mueang Airport pledged to cover the woman’s medical expenses in addition to compensation.
The victim’s son said his family was “shocked” by the events and he was worried about his mother’s mental health.
“Although she tries to show her strength through her facial expressions, we know she is heartbroken by the sudden loss of her leg,” he explained.
The airport manager expressed his deepest condolences on the incident. He also pointed out that lanes are inspected daily, with an additional inspection every month. The hallway where the incident happened is closed until further notice. As part of an investigation by airport management, a team of engineers will come to inspect the mechanism.
