A woman was trampled by a camel that was “walking loose” on a road on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The woman, in her 50s, is now hospitalized with injuries to her wrist after being hit by a camel in Gympie around 10am on Saturday.

She had been on Noosa Street in Mothar Mountain when she encountered the renegade animal, believed to be roaming alone.

It is not known where the animal came from.

Earlier this month, three camels were spotted loose in north Brisbane after escaping their enclosure at a nativity scene.

Bridgeman Baptist Community Church in Bridgeman Downs confirmed the animals had migrated, with footage showing them strolling down a busy road and bringing traffic to a standstill.

A spokesman for the church told Chron Australia the camels were part of their Christmas shows and are being looked after by a local company, Camelot Camels, which specializes in camel rides.

Owner Melanie Fitzgibbon said it took about 30 minutes to bring back the cheeky camels.

“We keep them pretty safe and we fed them this morning and my husband said he was taking them for a walk and when he went to check on them they had the gate open,” she said.

“They were just a little further ahead of us on foot, we knew where they were, it was just a matter of catching up – they are fast travellers.”

Mrs Fitzgibbon said the camels were returned safely.

“This was definitely something for the commuters!” she said.
