President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Friday (24th) that it was “urgent” for a group of countries not involved in the Ukraine war to take on the role of negotiating to restore peace to advance in Eastern Europe.
The president made the statement on a social network on the day the conflict lasts a year. The war, which began in February 2022, has already claimed thousands of lives.
“At a time when humanity needs peace in the face of so many challenges, a year of war between Russia and Ukraine has come to an end. There is an urgent need for a group of countries not involved in the conflict to take responsibility for forwarding negotiations to restore peace,” Lula said.
In recent days, the Brazilian government has been lobbying for a group of nations to step into the scenario to conduct negotiations between the two countries involved in the conflict.
Lula has previously stated that Brazil is a country of peace and does not want to take sides in the war in Eastern Europe. For him, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a “big mistake,” but “if one doesn’t want to, two don’t fight.”
He also said he had no interest in sending weapons that could be used in war. “Brazil does not want any involvement, even indirectly,” the PT said last month.
