A year on the run for Pastor Mukendi

Pastor Paul Mukendi was due to serve an eight-year sentence a year ago for sexually assaulting an ex-believer multiple times, but fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo instead.

But a year later, the pastor is still taunting the Canadian authorities, over and over again.

The refugee lives as a free man in his country of origin. He is still very active on social media where he promotes his meetings and activities with his followers.

The Service de Police de la Ville de Quebec (SPVQ) had little to say about the investigation but said it was ongoing.

“An investigation is still underway by the SPVQ to locate Mr. Mukendi. However, we will not comment further on the file or the means we have used, in order not to damage our efforts. Should there be an arrest or any significant development, we would contact you,” the SPVQ said.

Hard on the victims

Such an investigation, which stretches over months or even years, also has an impact on victims, according to a staffer at the Center for Assistance to Crime Victims (CAVAC).

“If it expands over time, it doesn’t seem to be progressing, it can be even more difficult for the victim to endure. She may feel that it is impossible to move on, to find balance in her life,” explains Marie-Christine Villeneuve, CAVAC’s communications coordinator.
