On Tuesday it became known that Aaron Rodgers agreed to the terms of a new contract with the Packers. He found fault with reports that he “signed” a new deal, although no one reported that he actually signed a new contract.
Two days later, there is no sign that Rodgers has signed a contract.
The simple reality is that the new contract must be signed before Wednesday, March 16th. Otherwise, the Packers will incur a $46.66 million fee for Rodgers in 2022. The Packers, lacking ceiling space, need Rodgers to sign a new contract that converts most, if not all, of his 2022 salary into a guaranteed payout and, in turn, knocks down his ceiling number.
Rogers also found fault with the report on the four-year, $200 million deal. Perhaps he does not like the idea that he will earn $ 50 million a year. Maybe he just wanted some attention after the Russell Wilson deal pushed Rodgers’ decision off the top of the NFL news list.
Either way, Rogers will inevitably sign on, and details will inevitably become available. We will see all the details and we will be able to interpret the practical duration and value of the transaction. For example, it could be a two year commitment with three additional years at the end to help with the current team situation.
Eventually, the decision-making process that Rogers has been involved in this year (Packers, another team, or retirement) could turn into an annual routine, similar to Brett Favre’s annual discussions. It all depends on what is specifically stated in the contract.
First, Rogers must sign it.
