Aaron Rodgers: There’s no benefit to only playing one series preseason

The Packers haven’t given Aaron Rodgers preseason snaps since 2018, but playing him this year hasn’t been taken off the table yet.

Rodgers won’t play in the first two games and the Packers have not announced plans for their third game. If Rodgers plays, it’s likely because the team wants him to work with new receivers in a playing environment ahead of the regular season in hopes of avoiding the kind of blowout loss that opened the 2021 campaign.

On Tuesday, Rodgers called that decision “kind of a no-win situation outside the building,” as both a preseason injury and a Week 1 loss open the door for criticism of the decision. However, if the call is to play, Rodgers wants to play for a while because deciding on a series is “a waste of time.”

“I don’t see any benefit in that,” Rodgers said of ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky. “I definitely don’t see any benefit in just playing one series. When we play, we should play and play a quarter, a couple of series, two to three series. Getting ready for just four plays is a waste for me.”

Rodgers said he’s shared that sentiment with head coach Matt LaFleur and believes LaFleur will do what’s best for the team as it approaches the final preseason participation.
