The Vox boss continues to try to get the PP to join a motion of no confidence in Pedro Sánchez, although at the moment he is stabbing the bones. To this end, Santiago Abascal called Alberto Núñez Feijóo a few days ago to tell him that he will propose the economist Ramón Tamames as a candidate for the presidency of the government, according to sources close to the PP leader, who still does not see the initiative . Feijóo told Abascal that while he still believed that Pedro Sánchez would only benefit from the motion, he would not oppose it and would abstain. Yes, the PP does not like Tamames’ candidacy at all, which the popular leadership describes as “nonsense”. Feijóo, who has also been in contact with the former PCE leader in recent days, tried to dissuade him from appearing. “If I were your father, I wouldn’t let you do this,” Feijóo even told Tamames, 89, in a phone call.
Although the motion is a Vox proposal, with which the PP has nothing to do in principle, the popular leader has been in contact with Abascal and the possible extreme right candidate in recent weeks. Feijóo had lunch with Tamames in January before learning of his possible candidacy and later spoke to him on the phone when it was revealed that Vox were planning to nominate him as a candidate for prime minister. However, according to the version of the PP boss, he wanted to try to get the economist not to accept the order from Vox. He asked him for his opinion and Feijóo told him it was nonsense and challenged him to think about whether he would be able to endure 12 hours of debate in Congress. He reminded him that Parliament had nothing to do with the one Tamames knew from when he was an MEP, because now there were more than a dozen political groups and he had to answer all of them.
Feijóo is particularly upset about the former communist leader’s candidacy, and those close to him even say that the Vox motion has become a little too “folkloric” with this proposal. The leader of the PP believes that the initiative, and even more so with Tamames as a candidate, will be an “opportunity for the PSOE” and bring Pedro Sánchez “a victory”, in addition to being able to change the public debate that is now changing focused on the government’s problems with the law is yes only yes.
However, according to PP sources, Tamames gave no indication that he intends to retire and instead asked Feijóo to “trust him more” and told him he was ready to give “an opinion” on the situation in Spain . “I won’t die peacefully if I don’t,” he came to tell Feijóo. The leader of the PP believes that the motion of no confidence with Tamames as a candidate is not typical of a country like Spain, which is “a serious country”.
At the moment, Vox has not confirmed Tamames as a candidate for the motion, nor has the 80-year-old economist made a move forward. In the PP they believe that the ideal scenario would be for Vox to use Tamames’ resignation as an excuse to give up the initiative. But sources from the far-right party, quoted by EFE, assure that the motion is going ahead and will be registered this February, and that they intend to debate it before Easter so it doesn’t clash with the Municipality campaign in May.
