The chairman of Vox, Santiago Abascal, met this Saturday with former US President Donald Trump in Washington DC as part of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the annual meeting of the far-right wing of the US Republicans, as the Ultra party reported. The meeting, which lasted 15 minutes, allowed both parties to analyze their common policy. Vox highlights, among other things, “strengthening borders against illegal immigration; the sovereignty of nations against globalism; the protection of family and life from gender ideology and woke culture; the prosperity of the middle class in the face of climate dictatorship or the firm commitment to investing in defense.”
The Vox boss gave a speech in Spanish at the party conference on Friday in which he emphasized his extremely conservative profile and praised the traditional family, private property, the “faith of our fathers” or the defense of “life” from its beginnings to its natural end,” against abortion or euthanasia, in one of his most celebrated passages. He also attacked universities, which he said had become “machines of censorship, coercion, indoctrination and anti-Semitism” and “the spearhead of the coming authoritarianism.” Abascal, who presented himself as a “Spanish patriot,” attacked the Spanish government, which he said consists of “communists and socialists who protect and support Hamas terrorism and declare themselves allies of the criminal regimes of Venezuela and Nicaragua. “.
This year the congress has a Latin American flavor, since in addition to the leader of Vox, the Argentine president, the anarcholiberal Javier Milei, was also invited; Salvadoran President Navib Bukele, who overwhelmingly renewed his office after using rapid methods to combat criminal gangs; Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro; and Mexican actor and anti-abortion activist Eduardo Verástegui. Abascal had attended CPAC on other occasions, but this was the first time he was on the podium as an audience member and at this edition. Trump and Abascal had not yet met, although the former sent a recorded message to the annual Vox party in 2022 in which he referred to him as his political representative in Spain.
In his speech, Trump, the favorite to win the White House again in next November's presidential election, mentioned Abascal and other guests and emphasized his “great reputation among conservatives around the world.” He also encouraged the Spanish Ultra party to continue defending its postulates.
On Friday, before attending the party conference in Washington, Abascal met with the leaders of the Heritage Foundation, the ultra-conservative foundation with which Disenso, its Vox counterpart, has teamed up, which has helped the Spanish party present itself in the most right-wing circles in the Republican Party.
Speakers at the ultra-conservative conclave also included the architect of Trump's 2016 victory and his fugitive White House adviser Steve Bannon, as well as the traditionalist and anti-vaxxer Joseph Strickland, whom Pope Francis deposed as bishop of Tyler, Texas.
