abbott elementary renewed season 2 abc 1

‘Abbott Elementary’ renewed for second season on ABC –

Class will be next year: ABC has renewed freshman comedy Abbott Elementary for season 2, the network announced Monday.

Quinta Brunson, who also created the series, plays Janine, an idealistic high school teacher who works hard to improve the lives of her students at an underfunded public school in Philadelphia. Tyler James Williams plays fellow teacher (and possibly love interest) Gregory, and Janelle James plays the wildly superficial principal Ava. Sheryl Lee Ralph, Chris Perfetti and Lisa Ann Walter also play teachers at Janine’s school.

Debuting in December with a one-time preview, Abbott Elementary took over Tuesday at 9 p.m. in January. Reviews were strong, as were ratings, with its freshman averages of 3.9 million viewers and a demo rating of 0.9 (including Live+7 DVR playback). Of the half-dozen comedies shown by ABC this television season, The Conners is #1 in ratings and #4 in total audience (behind Home Economics and Black).

It also ties up CBS’ own comedy hit “Ghosts” in the demo.
