A man has filed a complaint against three women who gave his ex-girlfriend abortion pills to terminate her pregnancy in Texas, a conservative state where abortion is now illegal.
These lawsuits appear to be a first since the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal. United States, which blew up abortion rights in June 2022. And they attack pills that have become crucial to abortion access in the country.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday, finds that anyone who assists a woman with an abortion can be prosecuted for murder under Texas law.
54% of abortions performed are medical
The plaintiff, Marcus Silva, alleges that his ex-wife became pregnant in July 2022 while they were still married and hid her pregnancy from him. He accuses three women of using abortion pills to help his former partner have an abortion, citing private messages between them.
In the text messages, which were apparently sent in a friendly manner, two of these women explain to Marcus Silva’s ex-partner how he gets these pills. According to the complainant, the third woman named would then be responsible for delivering the medicines.
The plaintiff even intends to sue the maker of the abortion pills used by his ex-wife if he is identified, the lawsuit states. However, Marcus Silva’s ex-girlfriend is not the subject of the charges. Abortion pills are at the center of the battle for access to abortion in the United States, where 54% of abortions performed are medical.
Essential stamps for right-backs
These stamps are considered essential to defenders of this right. Women in the fifteen or so states where abortion is illegal can travel to neighboring states to receive the pills, a simpler procedure than surgery.
For the same reasons, opponents of abortion want to ban it at all costs. Marcus Silva is also represented by an elected Republican representative and conservative attorney Jonathan Mitchell, the inventor of Texas’ recent very restrictive abortion law.
A conservative Texas judge will soon have to decide whether the drug agency will approve the abortion pill. A long-awaited decision, as it could lead to a ban on these stamps throughout the United States.
