In her review of Borgen’s fourth season, former New York Times reporter Caryn James calls the Danish series “the best political drama of all time,” striking a perfect balance between over-the-top West Wing idealism and the irrepressible cynicism of House of Cards. I tend to agree with her, although West Wing’s fiddles have kept me from enduring more than a few episodes of it. All that to say I’m glad Constella1 decided to share with us the very interesting reasons why Borgen is his favorite politics series, which is the subject of this blog’s third and final fundraiser of 2022:

“Firstly because of the quality of this series, but also because of its resonance in my private life. I discovered Borgen around the same time my son was dating a Danish girl. This beautiful young woman he’s returned with from London after a two-year absence…

“What is fascinating is that she also had a political fate afterwards. In doing so, I learned that his study abroad program was fully paid for and corresponded to his choice of country. I remember that she had even done an internship at the UN. We will understand better later why taxes and duties are so high in Denmark!

“With her passion for politics and the environment, she is now a Member of Parliament in Denmark. From the left, she continues to fight for her beliefs, such as environmental protection. So Lisbeth gave me this interest in Danish politics at the time, which of course made Borgen even more appealing to me.

“Borrow shows us the choices that can be made in this area and whether power is used to maintain control or to please people; whether legitimate authority stems from moral goodness or ambition merely to retain power; whether it is better to be respected or loved; and then how to balance personal life and political life for a woman who is Prime Minister, wife and mother at the same time. »

That pretty much sums up the main themes of this series by Adam Price, which has become a worldwide success largely because of its very acute scenarios and its main character, the lovable and relentless Brigitte Nyborg, who later becomes Foreign Minister as Denmark’s first woman Prime Minister be. To see if it hasn’t already happened.

In the meantime, keep sharing your favorite politics series in the comments section of this blog. And keep contributing to this fundraiser. If it’s already done, thank you!
