Vatican City – The shadow of abuse stretches over John Paul II: In Poland, some old documents from the archives of the communist police are causing debate, allegedly showing that as bishop he knew about abuse of minors by priests, which he covered up by using them transferred them to other parishes far away from Kraków. The investigation was conducted by TVN and signed by Marcin Gutowski, a well-known investigative journalist who has also just published a book called Maxima Culpa. After Karol Wojtyla’s reconstruction, he transferred the priests to other dioceses, one of them even in Austria, precisely to ensure that no scandal erupted in which the Church was directly involved.

Pedophilia in the church, a victim: “Ratzinger was informed, I sent him the documents”

In practice, he wrote a letter of recommendation for a priest accused of abuse to the then Viennese Cardinal Franz König. According to Gutowski, in addition to the documents, he also spoke to the victims and their relatives and had the silence and lack of transparency of the church confirmed. The reporter also mentions documents from the former secret police during the communist era that he had access to. However, the diocese of Kraków did not confirm this and denied him access to their diocesan archives. In recent years, too, the Polish Church has refused to provide documents to the Polish judiciary or to the public commission of inquiry investigating cases of abuse. Gutowski claims to have collected testimony from an individual who spoke personally to then-Cardinal Wojtyla in 1973 about an abusive priest.

Vatican investigation exonerates Cardinal Dziwisz: “Never covered up pedophiles.” But a victim from Mexico: “He knew about Maciel”

“Wojtyla first wanted to make sure it wasn’t a bluff and asked that it not be reported anywhere – he said he would look into it.” The cardinal at the time had specifically asked that the alleged relationship be kept top secret. Poland is shocked by this umpteenth investigation by John Paul II. Not so long ago, Wojtyla was also remembered through further research, this time by a Dutch journalist, Ekke Overbeek.
