During a recent episode of the YouTube Hot Ones series, the Scottish singer-songwriter kindly took aim at the record labels when discussing his music. Host Sean Evans asked the 26-year-old singer what he learns as an artist when a track exceeds his expectations, recalling that his 2019 song “Bruises” made him the fastest unsigned artist to hit 25 million streams reached on Spotify.
“You just learn that you don’t know anything. “You learn that you don’t know anything and nobody has the answer,” Lewis Capaldi replied. You don’t know what a hit is. Every time I think a song is a hit, it’s a fucking flop.”
“Record companies don’t know, you don’t know. Nobody knows anything. No offense,” the “Someone You Loved” singer continued while waving to unseen people behind the camera, presumably record company execs.
“Hot Ones” was recorded before the singer announced a career break. Lewis Capaldi has indeed announced that he is canceling all his concerts and all planned professional commitments after battling Tourette Syndrome during his Glastonbury show in late June.
