The CMA’s final report on blocking the Activision-Blizzard acquisition continues to teach us a little more about the three giants of the video game industry. While we recently mentioned the arrival of Call of Duty in Xbox Game Pass, as well as the fact that the lockdown banned Microsoft from purchasing Activision for 10 years, today it’s the place of Nintendo and its Switch that we’re talking about.
The Nintendo Switch offers more mature content than the Xbox
In response to suggesting that Nintendo’s offering likely differs from Sony and Microsoft’s due to a perceived younger demographic, Microsoft claimed that Nintendo not only appeals to a family audience, but instead offers a wider range of “mature” content than Xbox -Consoles.
Additionally, Microsoft claimed that the Switch has, on average, a lower percentage of young gamers than its competitors:
Microsoft also presented data showing that the distribution of gamers by age is similar across all three consoles, confirming that Nintendo is targeting similar audiences as Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
She also argued that, according to the same data, the Switch has, on average, a lower proportion of young gamers than consoles from Sony and Microsoft.
While it’s true that the Switch can easily be relegated to the ranks of consoles more suited to children, some of the latest Nintendo Switch exclusives are games that are classified as “mature.”
Microsoft’s praised portability of the Switch
In addition to its statements about Nintendo’s target audience, Microsoft also touted the portability of the Switch, even considering it a “significant advantage” over PlayStation and Xbox:
Microsoft also argued that the Nintendo Switch’s portability gives it a significant advantage over PlayStation and Xbox by giving users the ability to play games from the comfort of their own homes.
We know that Microsoft values the nomadic market, especially with the development of Xbox Game Pass in conjunction with Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Soon, gamers in the Xbox ecosystem will also be able to enjoy PC Game Pass games natively from a Windows 11 console like the Asus Rog Ally, which will be fully revealed on May 11th.
