Two fighter jets and two Russian military helicopters were shot down in explosions on Saturday (13) in Bryansk near the border with Ukraine. Videos circulating on social media show a helicopter on fire, suggesting the plane was shot down. Everyone on the plane would have died.

The cause of the explosions has not been officially confirmed. According to the Russian news agency Kommersant, Ukrainian forces staged an ambush to shoot down a Su34 fighterbomber, a Su35 fighter and two helicopters. The Su34 is considered one of the main pieces of equipment in the Russian army.

The Russian state news agency TASS reported the crash of the Su34 in Bryansk, but gave no information about the cause. The agency also quoted emergency services in the town of Klintsi, 40 km from Ukraine, as saying that an engine fire in one of the helicopters caused the explosion, but did not name the Su35 fighter or the second helicopter.

Although Kyiv has not officially commented, Mikhailo Podoliak, one of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s advisers, called the explosions on social media “justice and instant karma”.

On Saturday, Bryansk region governor Alexander Bogomaz said a Ukrainian drone struck a food factory in Starodub, near the border with Ukraine, damaging the building’s roof. Bogomaz said there were no injuries.

Bogomaz had already reported a drone attack on an oil storage facility in the region on Thursday (11).
