According to his party, AfD leader Tino Chrupalla has left the city again following the still-unexplained incident at an AfD election campaign event yesterday in Ingolstadt, Germany.
“Tino Chrupalla has now been able to leave Ingolstadt and will receive additional medical treatment,” said an AfD press release this evening. All scheduled dates for the election campaign in Bavaria have been cancelled. A new state parliament will be elected in the Free State this Sunday.
Prosecutor: No sign of attack
Chrupalla, 48, was hospitalized during an AfD election campaign event in central Ingolstadt. According to his office, he was taken to the intensive care unit. There was also talk of a “puncture site” on the body. The police and the Public Ministry spoke of “superficial redness or swelling”.
The exact context remains unclear. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has started investigations against unknown people on suspicion of bodily harm, but so far it says it has “no information” that Chrupalla was attacked.
The AfD initially stuck to its original statement that there had been an “incident of aggression”. The message that night referred to a “physical attack.” A “knife” was diagnosed at the hospital. “Mr Chrupalla also suffered from severe pain and nausea.”
