Will Sophie Dupuis be the next Quebec filmmaker to try her luck in Hollywood? The director of Solo And Underground is on the renowned magazine's list of ten filmmakers to watch in 2024 diversity.
The Québécoise is thus following in the footsteps of its illustrious colleagues Denis Villeneuve and Philippe Falardeau, who had the honor of appearing on this list in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
Several big names in Hollywood cinema were also on Variety's annual list early in their careers, including Christopher Nolan (2001) and Wes Anderson (1997).
Among the other filmmakers selected this year we find in particular the actress Anna Kendrick, who released her first film as a director, Woman of the Hour, in 2023, and Blitz Bazawule, who recently signed the adaptation of the musical comedy La Purple Color released in cinemas.
Sophie Dupuis began gaining interest in Hollywood in the fall of 2018 when her debut film Watchdog was selected to represent Canada in the running for the Oscar for Best International Film. But it wasn't until her third feature film, Solo, that she secured a spot on the Variety list.
Released in Quebec last September, Solo stars Théodore Pellerin as a drag queen who enters a toxic relationship with a new colleague. The film was named Best Canadian Feature Film at the recent Toronto International Film Festival.
