In an exclusive interview with CNN, Volodymyr Zelenskyy took stock of the human and military toll of the war on his territory against Russia.
It has been almost two months since the war in Ukraine was sparked by the invasion of the Russian army. When the damage in Ukrainian cities like Kharkiv or Mariupol is significant, President Voldymyr Zelenskyy has paid his human and military toll. With that, the Ukrainian army would have lost 2,500 to 3,000 fighters since the beginning of the conflict. The force would also suffer from 10,000 wounded whose vital projections are proven, he told American media.
A much heavier record on the Russian side?
However, according to the President of Ukraine, the toll on Russian troops would be much higher. Vladimir Putin’s army would be hampered by the loss of 19,000 to 20,000 soldiers since the beginning of this war.
A number that is difficult to verify, especially as Russia acknowledges a much smaller toll with 1,351 dead within its divisions. The two parties involved each communicate in such a way as to destabilize their opponent in order to achieve their goals.
In addition, the Ukrainian leader declined to comment on the full human cost of the invasion among civilians. In the city of Mariupol alone, the country’s authorities regretted 20,000 to 22,000 deaths.
