The online poll was conducted between March 31 and April 3, after it was announced Trump would face charges of bribing a porn star ahead of the 2016 election.

Trump is the first US President to be prosecuted. He is scheduled to plead not guilty in a Manhattan court on Tuesday.

In recent weeks, DeSantis has come under fire for a March 13 statement in which he said it was not in the vital national interest of the US “to become further embroiled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia.”

Trump has stepped up his attacks on DeSantis, who has not officially announced his candidacy but is expected to run.

About 71% of Americans, including 58% of Republicans, believe it is credible that Trump paid porn star Stormy Daniels not to talk about an affair before the 2016 presidential election. Trump has maintained his innocence and denied the affair, although he admitted Daniel paid.

At the same time, 51% of respondents, including 80% of Republicans, said the allegations were politically motivated.

These numbers remain largely unchanged from the previous month.

The survey of 706 American adults has a credibility interval, a measure of accuracy, of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points for all respondents and plus or minus 4.5 percentage points for Republicans.
