Mohamad Al Ballouz is accused of the premeditated murder of his two children, aged 2 and 5, and the unpremeditated murder of his wife Synthia Bussières, 38.
He is also threatened with an arson charge.
Last September 25, in the middle of the night, a fire alarm went off in an apartment on the 12th floor of an apartment building on Saint-Laurent Street in Brossard.
When the fire brigade arrived at the family’s home, it turned out to be a minor fire. But first responders were faced with a terrifying scene: they discovered three lifeless bodies, that of the mother and her two young children, Eliam and Zac.

held
Mohamad Al Ballouz, who has been detained since his arrest shortly after the tragedy, recently applied for a provisional release pending trial. He wanted to stay with relatives.
But Judge Alexandre Boucher of the Superior Court turned it down.
“The alleged offenses are extremely serious and were committed under appalling circumstances,” the judge said.
Several relatives of Synthia Buissières were present at the Longueuil courthouse yesterday.
They said they were relieved to learn the defendant would remain behind bars for the remainder of the trial.
Satisfied
“I am satisfied, we must honor my daughter and my two grandchildren who I lost,” said Sylvie Guertin.
According to the latter, her daughter personified “kindness”.
“She did everything, she took care of her children,” she said, touched.
The accused is due to return to court next March to have the investigation dropped.
