ACM 2022 host Dolly Parton dedicated ‘the whole show’ to Ukraine: ‘I want us to send our love and hope’

Dolly Parton had a heavy heart on Monday as she attended the 57th Academy of Country Music Awards (ACM).

The 76-year-old Strings of the Heart star delivered an opening monologue dedicating “the whole show” to Ukraine, asking everyone to pray to the people of Ukraine at the height of the Russian invasion.

“I love to laugh, I love to joke, and we’re going to have a good time tonight, but I want us to get some serious attention before we start with all our fun,” Parton said, addressing the crowded crowd. Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. “Now I don’t want to be a politician, and I’m not. I would rather get rid of a kidney stone than do this, but I want us to send our love and hope to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine.”

“So why don’t we just dedicate this whole show to them and pray for peace in this crazy old world?” she added before presenting a joint performance featuring Jimmy Allen and Gabby Barrett.

Standing in a shimmery mosaic bodysuit, Parton opened the 2022 ACM in chic style. Certainly fitting for the glitz and glam of a Vegas night, Parton was equally self-deprecating and full of humour, taking a few bites at herself while relaxing the crowd before a jam-packed night of performances by country music’s top names.

“I wanted to shine tonight, did I do it?!” she said during her monologue. “I was walking through the hall, going on stage, and a disco ball fell right on me. I was covered in shards of glass.”

“I just hope I don’t get pierced or I’ll be floating around this room like an inflatable doll,” she joked. “So catch me if you can!”

After a leaked video showing him using racial slurs, ACM announced that they had banned “Wallen’s potential participation and eligibility” at last year’s awards show. At the time, the 28-year-old musician was subsequently suspended by his record label Big Loud Records and conglomerates such as iHeartRadio who were pulling his music from their stations.

Wallen waited several months before publicly breaking his silence on the incident by sharing a handwritten letter with fans on social media in April.

In November, Wallen announced the “Dangerous Tour” for 2022.

In his ACM keynote on Monday, Wallen did not directly mention the issue and his absence from recent awards ceremonies, but may have alluded to it, saying that returning the honor home would “mean” for his one-year-old son, Indigo. Wilder, “that his father was a fighter, that he pursued his dreams and worked hard to make them come true.”

Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood won the single of the year for their duet “If I Didn’t Love You” and Lainey Wilson for “Things a Man Oughta Know”. The artists later performed the songs live on the show, which featured many performances.

Miranda Lambert also received the long-awaited Artist of the Year award, and many fans took to social media to share their praise for the country star.

“You can say whatever the hell you want. But NOBODY, NOBODY deserves this award more than Miranda Lambert. 22 years later,” wrote one Twitter user, while another echoed the sentiment addition“Damnest Time!”
