Activist Greta Thunberg evicted during protests against the expansion of an opencast mine in Germany

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was arrested by German police along with other demonstrators during protests in the mining town of Lützerath in the west of the country. Several pictures show how the agents take her away. Climate activists have been fighting for days against the eviction of the township, in which an opencast coal mine is to be expanded.

As a spokesman for the Aachen police explained, Thunberg was part of a group that got too close to the area where the mine starts and was prevented from passing by the agents for safety reasons. “She was taken out of immediate danger with this group to identify her,” he told Portal. A witness said he saw Thunberg, who had joined the protesters on Friday, sitting on a police bus.

Lützerath in North Rhine-Westphalia has become the epicenter of the fight against the climate crisis and the German debate about returning to burning coal after the Ukraine crisis. Hundreds of activists living in tree houses, tents or empty farms resisted the eviction for several days. Finally, this Monday, the police removed the last two protesters who were hiding in a tunnel. The company with the most CO2 emissions in Europe, the energy group RWE, is preparing to demolish the city, which was uninhabited two years ago, in order to expand a gigantic open-cast coal mine.
