Sao Paulo
The actress and singer Denise Assunção died this Thursday at the age of 67 from complications of colon cancer.
The information was published by the Instituto Itamar Assumpção, an institution that preserves the legacy of his brother, one of the biggest names in the São Paulo avantgarde.
“She embodied dignity and lineage. She was an impressive presence and impressed with her awareness and clarity, her boundless talent, her firm and unusual attitude, which affirmed the need for respect and reparation,” the institute said in a statement. “With her life and her body, she showed what it means to be a black artist in the country.” The location of the wake has not yet been announced.
Born in 1956 in Tietê, in the interior of São Paulo, Assunção began amateur theater as a teenager in the towns of Arapongas and Londrina in Paraná, as her father moved frequently due to his work as an employee of the now defunct Instituto Brasileiro do Café. He traveled through Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro until, under the influence of his brother, he arrived in São Paulo. His career took off in the city.
In the 1980s he took part in the shows of Itamar Assunção's band Isca de Police. In 1990 he released the album “A Maior Bandeira Brasileira”, his only album.
In 2016 he presented the show “Câmeras Observando, Microfones Ligados”, in which he sang repertoire of his brother and Bezerra da Silva.
In addition to music, she also devoted herself to dramaturgy. The artist was part of the cast of the films “Jeca e seu Filho Preto” and “A Banda das Velhas Virgens”, both starring Amácio Mazzaropi.
He also appeared in shows such as “O Jardim das Cerejeiras” and “Misterios Gozózos”. In 2005, he joined the cast of the miniseries Hoje É Dia de Maria.
