Adam Sandler returned to NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where he graduated 34 years ago, to deliver a speech for the school’s inaugural ceremony.
Balancing his speech with heart and humor, the 55-year-old actor said: “We just want to give those around us an escape from this increasingly psychotic world that we live in.
“The main reason we tischies chose the arts is that there is literally nothing else we can do: what should I do, become an investment banker? I can’t even find my wallet three times a week.”

The Uncut Gems actor joked about the nature of the performing arts during his speech, telling the parents in attendance they “really screwed it up” and “could support these kids for a very long time.”
He added: “They won’t be leaving the nest anytime soon. It’s a tough deal they’ve chosen, but there’s still time to talk them out of it.”
The New York native, Brooklyn, added that he’s trying to talk his daughters Sadie, 16, and Sunny, 13, “out of showbiz, and they know the friggin’ Adam Sandler.”
The Saturday Night Live former joked that he had “two pieces of advice” for parents attending the ceremony.

Sandler told the parents in attendance, “You won’t be leaving the nest anytime soon. This is a tough deal they chose, but there’s still time to talk them out of it.
“First, somehow slip your child’s headshot into Mr. Martin Scorsese before this event ends; he’ll love it, I promise,” Sandler said. ‘He’ll probably take the back exit out of here, so make sure you’re there before he does.
“And don’t take no for an answer — that’s how Leo’s mom did it,” he said, referring to Leonardo DiCaprio.
Reflecting on the nature of the business, Sandler said of the graduates, “Some will reach their goals quickly, some might take a little bit to get there, some will change their goals and say, ‘Fuck it, I’m going to be an agent.’ .”
Sandler told the crowd, “The main reason we Tischies chose the arts is because there’s literally nothing else we can do: what should I do, become an investment banker?”

The actor also joked about the thoughts the graduates must have during the turbulent time.
“Is school really over? What the hell am I doing with my life now? I’ve never been so hung over,” he said. “If I puke in my hat, will anyone notice? I hope my parents don’t expect me to pay for lunch afterwards. I can’t believe my dad is still looking for a parking spot.”
Other notable alumni of the school include Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, Idina Menzel, Alec Baldwin and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
