Netflix's next sci-fi film has a surprising lead role. The streamer has just released the first (very short) teaser for Spaceman, which stars Adam Sandler as an astronaut who encounters a mysterious alien being (voiced by Paul Dano) on a space exploration mission. Directed by Johan Renck, the film sounds strange and dark and is based on the Czech novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař.
Here's how Netflix describes the premise:
After six months of a lonely research mission to the edge of the solar system, astronaut Jakub (Sandler) realizes that the marriage he left behind may not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to make things right with his wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he's aided by a mysterious prehistoric creature he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanuš (Dano) works with Jakub to find out what went wrong before it's too late.
There's not much to say in the short teaser, but the setup is promising, and I for one am happy to see Sandler getting serious again. In a post on the Netflix blog, Renck said of Sandler: “I really wanted to have him appear in a way that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know.”
The remaining cast of Spaceman includes Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin and Isabella Rossellini. The film will stream on Netflix from March 1, 2024.
