Add, multiply and recycle: A world without waste is possible

The ecological challenges of today’s world, specific to each region of the planet, call for vigorous action tailored to the circumstances.

Gone are the days when awareness, education and awareness campaigns were the only mechanisms focused on action for change, such as B. the separation of household waste, institutional recycling or the reuse of packaging and hazardous materials.

Today, governments, citizens and businesses have transcended trade and corporate interests, leaving open that the only way to achieve substantive change in sustainability is through collective effort, capacity and vision on the urgency of the issue. In this context, the case of the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry (IMCC) and the El Amor Multiplica initiative are worth mentioning.

Together we are more and we do better things for the planet.Together we are more and we do better things for the planet.

Thanks to its governance, IMCC currently aims to achieve a zero-waste world by 2030 by working with its eight bottling partners to recover and recycle the equivalent of 100% of the packaging it brings to market through its products form strategic alliances aimed at achieving far-reaching transformations. The IMCC currently collects six out of ten containers that it puts on the market.

One of the most recent initiatives is the Mexican Coca-Cola and Rappi Industry project for #UnMundoSinResiduos. Thus, users of the mayoral offices of Benito Juárez, Cuauhtémoc and Miguel Hidalgo in Mexico City can request the collection of at least 15 PET, cardboard, glass and multi-layer containers with the recycling button at no cost, through a new tech flow by Rappi.

Adding to this initiative are other actions that have set a precedent in the green business arena, where technological change and business strategies balance environmental awareness for the future:

– Together with its eight bottling partners, they renewed the Sprite drink’s bottle from green to transparent, allowing for better integration into the recycling chain, and complemented the Ciel bottle, which is fully recycled and recyclable.

– In January 2022, the construction of the PLANETA plant began together with Coca-Cola FEMSA, which will focus on expanding the recycling capacity that the IMCC currently has in the country.

– Along with Arca Continental, IMCC announced an investment of 175 million pesos to strengthen collection and recycling capacity in Jalisco.

– In partnership with Fundación Azteca, IMCC has managed for the second time to keep public spaces and beaches clean with the Cleanup Days Limpiemos México por #UnMundoSinResiduos 2022, with the participation of more than 4,500 volunteers and the recycling of almost a hundred tons of waste Yucatan, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Morelos, Chiapas and the State of Mexico.

This is possible thanks to the consolidated infrastructure in the more than 96 years of experience that the Mexican Coca-Cola industry has in Mexico, where it has managed to position itself as a leader in innovation and development of waste treatment solutions. Currently, IMCC is the world’s largest food-grade PET recycler with PetStar, the world’s largest food-grade PET recycling facility, and IMER, the first in Latin America.

For the IMCC, the philosophy behind these actions sheds an important light on a shared vision: love as the engine that drives all our actions for Mexico. Thus, El Amor Multiplica makes sense as an integral platform where citizens and organizations can become agents of change through concrete actions such as sanitizing public spaces, cleaning beaches and bodies of water, training entrepreneurs, participating in community forums. Renovation of common spaces and circular economy projects, among others.
