Adele talks about her recent health issues.
During her New Year’s Eve performance at The Colosseum, the 34-year-old singer revealed to fans that she’s been battling an illness that’s making it difficult for her to walk.
“I have to waddle these days because I have really bad sciatica,” she told the audience while tossing merchandise T-shirts into the crowd, per Cosmopolitan.
Sciatica is pain that originates along your sciatic nerve — a nerve that stretches from the back of your pelvis to the back of your thigh. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the sciatic nerve is the main nerve in your leg and the largest nerve in your entire body.
Adele has had a history of opening up about dealing with pain for most of her life. In an interview with The Face in November 2021, she recalled slipping multiple discs in her back. “My first disc slipped when I was 15 when I sneezed. I was in bed sneezing and my fifth fell out. In January my sixth, my L6, slipped. And then when I had a cesarean, my core was useless,” she said.
She continued, “I’ve really had pain with my back for half my life. It flares up, usually due to stress or a silly attitude. But where I made my abs strong, down the butt, which I’ve never had before, my back doesn’t play along that much. That means I can do more, I can walk around with my kid a little more.
Speaking further about her fitness journey and how she feels now that her health has improved, the singer said: “I like to feel strong, I really do. I love it. I lifted weights this morning and I stepped up what I did a few weeks ago: when I feel like I’m carrying the weight of the world – at least my world – on my shoulders, I can handle it a little bit better because I’m with my weights gained 10 pounds. It was really just a metaphor for survival.”
