In Afghanistan, the Taliban regime has been restricting women’s freedoms for months. He just ordered beauty salons to close. There are thousands of them in the country that welcome women and are also led by women.
The women are discreet, almost invisible on the streets of Kabul (Afghanistan). Since the Islamists returned to power, the country has been mired in discrimination. The Supreme Leader just announced that beauty salons have a month to close their doors permanently. The institutes had multiplied during the 20-year American occupation. The women came to take care of themselves and to find a precious space of freedom away from the eyes of the men.
“I’ll die slowly at home”
“Schools are banned for women, now so are beauty salons… Do women have the right to have a place in this society?” asks an Afghan woman. By losing their job, they lose their income, but even more so. “This work was my only hope. I’m slowly dying at home now,” laments a woman who works in an institute. Many women then go into hiding to work, like one of them secretly teleworking for an NGO.
